mistress or queen

Would you rather be a mistress or a queen?

Caveats: As a mistress, you do have the king's ear. If you're a queen, you are *not* a ruling one-- you were married into this family and your chief purpose is to produce an heir. You have more freedom as a mistress and more wealth and respect as a queen.

Third Wave Powers

Mur Lafferty's novel Playing for Keeps tells the story of a group of characters with somewhat useless superpowers. These characters, known as the "Third Wave", have abilities like elevator control, the inability to drop a bartray, and discovering information about people by smelling them. If you were a member of the Third Wave, what power do you think you would have? What power would you want?

Coexisting in two timestreams

You have the ability to coexist in two different timestreams: the one you exist in now, and one other of a time or place of your choice.

Caveats:
  • Time continues to go forward in both worlds, even when you're in the other.
  • If you die in one timestream, you exist only in the other.
  • When you're gone in one timestream, you cannot be found in the other.
  • You cannot make any massive historical changes-- any attempts to meet with the great thinkers of the past, invent cell phones in the 1400s, or do anything like that will be thwarted.
  • You automatically know the language and the basic customs of the place you choose.

Magic In A Certain Slant Of Light

From Deborah Coates' "Magic In A Certain Slant Of Light", which appeared in Strange Horizons and on PodCastle:

"If you could wish for something magical, what would you wish for?" Jeff asks Nora as he enters the kitchen.

Jeff has been gone all day, helping a friend fix the plumbing in his basement. There's no "Hello," or "How was your day?" Just Jeff, in the doorway, asking about magic. "It can't be about yourself," he continues. "I mean, like making yourself immortal. Or about world peace. It has to be—"

"Talking dogs," Nora says.

You can wish for something magical. What do you wish for?

Give Someone Immortality

You have the ability to bring any dead person back to life and then grant them immortality. Who do you choose?

Caveat:
  • Immortality is defined as eternal life until the end of humanity-- when all of humanity dies, your dude dies too.

New Years Resolutions

You have the ability to create a New Years Resolution that will actually stick. You are compelled to do whatever you resolved to do. Which resolution do you use?

Caveat:
  • Though you are supernaturally compelled to keep this resolution, it won't magically make it happen-- so if you say you'll lose weight, you'll be compelled to eat more veggies and exercise more. The weight won't just go away.
